Current and Recent Developments

Filed under: Web Development — Tags: , — iain

It has been a busy end to the year.  Websites have been built for Assiso, SaaS Intelligence, Enable Glasgow and a few sites still in the development phase.  Some of these sites and more can be seen in our portfolio.

Assiso was primarily a rebuild but with the addition of a 3rd level of links and the removal of some unwanted design elements.  The site has also been built to a higher standard with accessibility and usability being the main improvements ( as is with all of our websites). Wordpress was also integrated with the website and the content management system.

SaaS Intelligence was designed as a Web 2.0 style website.  The Open ID enhanced login area links in to the SaaS (Software as a Service) services they provide including their Customer Relationship Management System.  Wordpress was also integrated with this website.

Enable Glasgow was the winner in our charity competition last year.  The site is built using our kCMS content management solution.

Currently we have several sites still in development which we cannot talk about just now but we are excited about one of the sites especially as it is an original concept and has a lot of functionality built into it.  Just wait until next month to see what it is!

From Progress to Completion

Filed under: Kiswebs, Web Development — iain

Its been a while since we last posted on our blog and for good reason.  We have been busy with some major projects on top of much more print design work in recent times.  We currently have more tenants organisations and housing associations on board using our products, an architects website and coming soon 2 large projects and several redesigns. On the print side there has been a large brochure and logo designs, letterheads, business cards and also leaflet designs since we posted the last time.

Also we have been doing some bespoke changes for our clients so if any of our clients require some changes or can see from our site that there is something we can add to their website then feel free to contact us.

We will add some of this work soon so feel free to return to find out about these projects and what we can do for you.

Winner of the Charity Website

We would like to thank everyone that entered the Charity Website competition for this year.  We had many excellent entries which meant the voting was tight.

The winner is Enable Glasgow.  As a result of this Enable Glasgow will be getting their own website in the coming months.

To all those who didnt succeed, next year we will be running our competition again and if you still dont have a website and you are a charity then feel free to submit yourself again.

Again thank you for all effort and time submitting the entries.

Choosing an accessible CMS

Accessibility is been an important area of web design but in the last few years it has become more prominent as designers seek to improve the quality of the constructed website. By making your website accessible you are increasing the number of people who won’t have any problems while visiting your site and hopefully leading to a larger number of people using your services or purchasing your products.

When we look at a website build by a CMS there are many things to bear in mind. Here are a few that I use when building a site.

a) The website HTML and CSS first and foremost has to be valid. This is quite easy to check using the tools available at the W3 website. Also make sure that all, if not the majority of the design and style is contained within the style sheet while structural tags are contained within the html code.
b) Make sure the document is structured properly so that when style sheets are turned off then the site content is rendered in a way that it is readable and flows down the page.
c) Forms have to be valid, this means that labels have to be associated with the relevant form controls, this can be checked by clicking on the label and the cursor should be active within the relevant field.
d) Provide meta data for each page in the site. The title tag is invaluable to a user using a voice or text-based browser that helps the user keep track of his or her location. Make sure all the title tags are as unique as you can create them.
e) Keep popup windows to a minimum although I would recommend that external websites are open in new windows
f) The navigation should be consistent throughout most if not all of the site and the navigation should be marked up with HTML list elements.
g) Make sure the screen doesn’t flicker to any extent. Flickering images may cause some people to have an epileptic fit or cause convulsions.
h) Tables should have headers in the right places, this enables website visitors to understand the data the columns and rows contain.
i) Make sure JavaScript is only used to enhance the site’s functionality and usability. If JavaScript is used and there is no alternative in place then the site’s functionality will most likely break down.
j) Make sure all images, files and objects have a text alternative. Many people may not have the correct version of Flash installed or images may be disabled. Providing a text alternative is good practice to make sure that users can access this content.
k) Make sure the colours on the website aren’t a problem for users who are colour-blind. Avoid certain colour combinations and make sure the contrast of the text to background is high.
l) Provide shortcuts to skip over navigation links to get straight to the content. It is annoying to users who have to keep tabbing through every link to get to the main content on each page.
m) Provide a breadcrumbs trail on the page so that the user is aware of exactly what section they are on when browsing your website.
n) Provide a low graphics version of the site so that users on smaller resolutions and smaller handheld devices can view the site without having to scroll horizontally.

This is only a small list of everything that needs to be done in order to make a site accessible. Not only this but when you are dealing with a content management solution then it makes life harder because of all the possibilities and combinations of content that can be added via the CMS administration panel. It isn’t something that many developers get right but it is something to bear in mind if you are looking at different CMS solutions.

Charity Website Design 2009

For those in the know.
If you are aware of our annual award of a free charity website please simply nominate a charity of your choice by completing the simple form on the CHARITY page on our website www.kiswebs.net

For those who need to know more.
In 2007 Kiswebs decided that it would be a good idea to contribute to local charities by giving away a free website design complete with a content management system so that the charity could manage its own website. The charity in question benefitted greatly which in turn made us feel good about ourselves. As such we decided we should make this an annual award and we are back in 2009 to help yet another charity.

Why are we telling you this? It is completely open to anyone to suggest a charity that they feel would benefit from our years of experience in website design and development. The good news is that it will not cost the charity a penny and all it may cost you is a few seconds of your time to nominate them.

Previous Winners of the Charity Website.
2008 - Darlinda’s Charity for Renal Research www.darlindascharity.co.uk
2007 - Never Away www.neveraway.co.uk

This year we have extended our contribution to also include some Design for Print services completely free together with the Website.

So 1 deserving charity (nominated by you and selected by the staff at Kiswebs) Will receive the following completely FREE.

  • Fully designed website complete with full Content Management Solution (CMS)
  • Full training on CMS
  • Website hosting
  • Domain Name
  • Ongoing support

Welcome to the newly designed Kiswebs website

Filed under: Kiswebs — Tags: — iain

It has been a while since we redeveloped our own website we thought it was time for a complete refresh. The older site no longer reflected the services we provided as we have improved, adapted and added more to our portfolio over that period of time.

For those that want to know exactly what we do or what we provide you only need look around the new website. Adding the blog to the fully cms enabled Kiswebs website gives us the opportunity to tell our current and potential clients exactly what we can do and what projects we are currently working on.

Also, we have a few members on our team that will regularly post here and this will also branch into subjects that are important in our field of work, or possibly tutorials on certain subjects that may help our clients to do more with their products.

More posts will be on the way soon
